Research at Yonsei Communication

The primary research areas of the Department of Communication at Yonsei University focus on elucidating the mechanisms and social impacts of public communication mediated by rapidly evolving new media technologies. The department takes an integrated view of communication phenomena across various levels—from individual cognition, emotions, and behavior to groups, public opinion, and networks, and further to institutional and policy environments—and analyzes from multiple perspectives the processes by which communication is formed, disseminated, received, and adjusted within the evolving media ecosystem.

In particular, the program broadly covers the dissemination of information and agenda-setting in digital platforms and social media environments; the dynamics of news and political communication and public opinion; and the social consequences resulting from network structures and interactions. At the same time, we conduct in-depth research on key issues in modern society, such as changes in journalism, media trust, the impact of algorithm-based recommendation systems and personalization on the public sphere, and the effectiveness and ethics of strategic communication, including advertising and public relations. Furthermore, in areas directly linked to citizens’ quality of life—such as health, crisis, and risk communication—we continuously provide evidence-based analyses and propose solutions.

Furthermore, this department has made the advancement of empirical communication research methodologies the cornerstone of its research capabilities and has actively developed quantitative analysis utilizing large-scale data and computational social science approaches. While refining techniques for analyzing online content and network data, as well as for designing and estimating experimental and survey studies, we conduct research that more accurately explains and predicts complex communication phenomena through mixed methodologies that integrate diverse approaches. Building on these methodological strengths, we systematically explore structural changes in the communication environment—such as digital transformation, platformization, and AI-based media environments—from a comparative domestic and international perspective, and we are continuously expanding research that translates academic achievements into social and policy implications.
